Patkau + Thom

Exciting upcoming projects for Patkau Architects and Bing Thom Architects. 

It will be particularly nice to see a cultural facility designed locally by Patkau.

Exploring Vancouver

Vancouver Heritage Foundation's final brown bag lunch happens this Wednesday November 21st. 

Harold Kalman will be speaking about his recent book Exploring Vancouver and the process of selecting buildings for inclusion. Robin Ward is the co-author.

Pictured above are the three previous editions of the book, published in 1974, 1978 and 1993 as well as the 2012 one. 

Though the 2012 edition is the most robust, each edition bears revisiting as they all have varied lists of building profiles, reflecting their respective eras.

After photographing the first two editions and skipping out on the third, John Roaf is back for the latest.

Henriquez Exhibits

Richard Henriquez has a show coming up at Winsor Gallery. Narrative Fragments features sculpture and mixed media and should be an interesting counterpoint to his architectural work. 

The show opens on June 7th and runs until June 30th. 

Disappearing Main Street

Excellent blog by David Niddrie and Jennifer Okrusko documenting the transitioning facade of Main Street. 

Far from an exercise in nostalgia, {Disappearing} Main Street is rather a quiet exploration into the nature and value of community.

Coast Modern Premiere

Coast Modern will premiere at the DOXA Festival in Vancouver on May 8, 2012.

Cardew Wins Gold

Peter Cardew has been awarded the RAIC Gold Medal for 2012.

Originally from England, Cardew moved to Vancouver in 1967, joining Rhone + Iredale. Among his designs at that firm was the Crown Life Tower, a building which has aged well and retains a remarkable originality in Vancouver's sea of glass.

In 1980 he established his own practice and has made significant contributions to Vancouver's built environment, including the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery and an inspired plan for the Garden Wall House, a challenging infill project that allows the retention of an early Bob Berwick-designed home.

Past recipients of the award include Bing Thom (2011), John Patkau and Patricia Patkau (2009) and Bruce Kuwabara (2006).

Western Living's Designers of the Year

Battersby Howat scooped Western Living's 2011 Designer and Interior Design awards and Omer Arbel won Industrial Designer.
